Solar energy services provider SunEdison (Beltsville, Md.) has entered the first phase of construction on a new 16 MW solar farm in Davidson County, N.C.
The first phase of the project represents 4 MW of generation capacity and comprises >14,000 solar panels, which are expected to generate >6 million kWh of electricity in the first year of operation.
Utility firm Duke Energy is buying the farm's entire output under a 20-year contract. Over those two decades, the farm is expected to generate 115 million kWh hours of electricity, enough to power 10,000 average homes. The farm also will offset >225 million pounds of CO2 that would have been put out by a coal-burning power plant.
"This first phase represents a major milestone in our overall plan to develop 16 MW of solar energy at this site," said Carlos Domenech, SunEdison's president.
