Integrated energy company Origin Energy Ltd. (Sydney, Australia) and memory chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Idaho) have formed a 50:50 joint venture designed to develop new solar PV technology.
"As we have looked to leverage our core strengths in other markets, PV energy technology is a natural area of investigation," said Mark Durcan, Micron's president and COO. "Combining our semiconductor manufacturing expertise with Origin's solar experience could result in a strong partnership."
Andrew Stock, Origin's executive general manager, major development projects, said, "We are pleased to joint venture with Micron as a global semiconductor leader to further explore the potential of solar photovoltaic technology."
The two companies' near-term goal of the strategic partnership is to merge Origin's past solar development work with Micron's manufacturing capabilities, and to look into opportunities for commercializing new products.
