India Completes First Large-Scale Solar Project
Suniva's solar cells power a grid-connected 1 MW installation in West Bengal, with modules and systems built by Titan Energy Systems. The partners have plans for more PV installations in the works, as India builds on its solar vision.

India's government recently announced its National Solar Mission, calling for 20 GW of solar projects by 2020. In relation to India's plans, Suniva Inc. (Norcross, Ga.) today announced the completion of its collaborative project with Titan Energy Systems Ltd. (Hyderabad, India) to create India's first large-scale solar project in Jamuria, West Bengal.

Suniva's monocrystalline silicon cells and Titan's modules power the 1 MW solar electric power plant that Titan designed and built for the West Bengal Energy Development Corp. The power plant, set to expand an additional 250 kW early next year, is expected to power more than 500 homes and a few coal mines in the local Asansol district.
"High-efficiency solar technology presents significant advantages in terms of land use and balance-of-system costs, and Suniva is our key partner for delivering the high power and volumes needed to keep projects reliably moving forward," said Sankar Chodagam, Titan's managing director.
Suniva also plans to partner with Titan on its recently announced 1 GWp of large-scale PV installations, planned over the next five years on 3000 acres of land in Andhra Pradesh, India. "As India pursues its significant goals for solar power, innovative solar cell technology will be just as crucial as new system designs and deployment strategies," said John Baumstark, CEO of Suniva.

Unfortunately, the picture shown in this article clearly does NOT look like Bengal, India - it is far too green and luscious! And according to Suniva's own picture, that wasn't the way the panels and mounts were laid out.
